Pair of etched wood corbel tables, painted with faux malachite and Verona red marble, Rome, c. 1830.
Description: Pair of etched wood corbel tables, gilded and painted with faux malachite and Verona red marble, Rome, c. 1830.
The typically Italian technique of faux marble became popular from the middle of the 18th century onwards. Its success was due to the new interest throughout the Europe of the time in semi-precious stones. The use of malachite, in particular, was directly inspired by far-off Russia, and these corbel tables are a great example of Russian styling.
Composed of copper carbonate, malachite is a mass of concretions with green concentric veining in various shades and intensities that the skilled artisan who made these tables was miraculously able to imitate.
The typically Russian use of gilded bronze combined with this particular semi-precious stone has been substituted by this artisan with Italian wood, gilded with gold leaf and etched with stylised palmette, acanthus leaf and rose motifs.
