A pair of silver baskets, Daniel & John Wellby, George V, London, 1927.
Description: Our two silver oval-shaped baskets, are hand-pierced and hand-engraved with floral decoration, inspired by the Dutch style of the eighteenth century. Floral decoration can be found on the entire surface of the two baskets, sustained by four legs in the shape of cornucopia with a bouquet of flowers
The revival of the Rococo style, typical of the nineteenth and early twentieth century, was conceived as a return to traditional techniques, typical of the Louis XV style, popular in Europe in the mid-eighteenth century.
Wellby was known for its fine imitation of earlier designs, and supplied many leading retailers, including Barnard & Sons, the oldest manufacturing silversmith in England.

The Daniel & John Wellby was founded in 1827 by Joseph Clement and John Wellby. The business was continued by Daniel and John Wellby at 57 King Street, Soho Square and later at 20 Garrick Street, Covent Garden, where by 1897 they are listed as diamond merchants and wholesale jewelers and dealers in silver. The firm was converted in 1896 into a limited liability company under the style of D & J Wellby Ltd.

Conditions are excellent considering age and use: no chips, no scratches, no restorations.

Marks: 1) D&J W for Daniel & John Wellby, 2) lion passant, standard mark sterling silver, 3) leopard's head, for London, 4) date letter M, for the 1927 year, 5) D&J.WELLBY Ltd, GARRICK ST, LONDON.
