A silvered and embossed copper torchere, Italy, early XVIII century.
Description:Our torchere has a triangular base and a stem composed of circular, embossed and engraved elements. The decoration is typical of the period: acanthus leaves, scrolls, cartouches and heads of winged cherubs.
The bowl of the candle-holder is decorated with scrolls and acanthus leaves.
The image of St. Roch, dressed as a pilgrim, with a staff and some shells is engraved in one of the three scrolls of the base. The Saint thigh shows the plague signs. He is accompanied by a dog carrying a loaf of bread in his mouth. The legend says that when the Saint was ill with plague, he was fed by the dog.
St. Roch is the patron saint of surgeons, pharmacists, pilgrims, travelers, invalids.
Inside the candlestick there is a wooden part with an iron rod.
It's ready for mounting electric light.
Some dents and distortions are visible.
