A Carl Deffner Art Nouveau Copper and Brass Vase, Esslingen, Germany, c. 1905.
Description: Carl Christian Ulrich Deffner was born in 1789 in Ludwigsburg, Germany. He started his metallwarenfabrikant around 1815 in Esslingen, Germany.
Carl had spent a period of his life in England where he had learned the process of silver plating from Sheffield. He was the first one to bring such technique to Germany and applied the silver plating to items of copper, brass and bronze.

Carl Christian died in 1846 in Esslingen. His two sons, Carl Ludwig and Wilhelm Adolf continued the work of their father. After the death of Carl Ludwig (1817-1877), the factory was run by Wilhelm.
Wilhelm Adolf Deffner (Esslingen 1829-1897) had two sons, Carl (Esslingen 1856-1948) and Otto (Esslingen 1866-1949). They grew up working in the factory with their father and when he died, they inherited it and continued the work in metal works of art for interiors.

From about 1890 to 1915 the Jugendstil or Art Nouveau style was prominent in the work of this manufacture that produced some important pieces for museums and collectors.
Our vase was produced at a time when there were strong design influences from WMF, Wiener Werkstatte and Josef Hoffmann among others in Europe and Christopher Dresser, Liberty and Keswick in the UK.
Japanese motives inspire the pattern at the top of our vase. Both its handles have the tipical coup de fouet shape, that characterizes the Art Nouveau style.
