Description:The plaster impression portrays Pope Leo XII, born Sermattei of Genga (Fabriano, Italy 1760 - 1829 Rome), serving from 28 September 1823 to 10 February 1829.
Leo XII celebrated the Holy Year of 1825. His reign, during the restoration age, can be seen as strongly opposed to the liberal ideas that the French Revolution had led throughout Europe.
The coat of arms is visible on the stole: a crowned eagle.
The technique of making impressions from cameos, engraved stones and antiques gems, medals, seals and coins, was widely used in Rome from the middle of the eighteenth century.
Such impressions, inspired from subjects of the Ancient Rome as well as from historical and contemporary characters, were appreciated and collected by foreign travelers in Italy during their Grand Tour.
The edge of our impression is wrapped in several layers of golden paper dating from the same period as the impression; it was probably placed on a support.
