'Urbis Romae Veteris ac Modernae accurata delineatio', Engraving with original hand Color by Johannes Baptiste Homann (1663-1724), Nuremberg, c. 1720.
Description: Johannes Baptiste Homann was the founder of a family firm that became a cartographic dynasty, dominating the German and international map market for a century, founding his firm in 1702. He produced his first atlas in 1704.
Homann made his way not merely as an engraver and mapseller, but also served as the geographer to the Kaiser of the Holy Roman Empire, Charles VI, in 1715.
For his strides in cartography, Homann was eventually honored with membership in the Prussian Royal Academy of Science in 1707.

Homann based this map of Rome on Giacomo de la Feuille’s map of the Eternal City, published in 1691, itself based on Giovanni Battista Falda’s monumental wall-map of 1676. This engraving, published in 1720, is an especially lavish example of Homann's work. In this particularly fine example, the coloring is of exquisite quality and clarity.

The City on Seven Hills is shown in remarkable detail, right down to the streets, churches, buildings, fountains, piazzas, bridges, statues and gates. A number of boats are also shown in the Tiber. The fourteen coats of arms of the city are shown along with a key featuring place names for each of the fourteen parts. The Faith and the Justice, the coat of arms of Pope Clement XI (1649–1721), and several cherubs and architectural borders finish this spectacular town plan, which illustrates the fine style and strong engraving indicative of J.B. Homann's early work. A fabulous decorative piece in full attractive color.
