A silver-plated flatware service, by CHRISTOFLE, model number 5701 'Louis XV Chrysanthèmes', France, end of XIX century.
Description: In France, Christofle has been a leader in the Arts de la Table since its creation in Paris in 1830 and its appointment as purveyor of King Louis-Philippe and the Emperor Napoleon.
Christofle has been the silversmith of choice for generations of French and international families, countless estates, embassies, many luxury hotels and corporate dining rooms, and ocean liners, (the most famous of all, the Normandie ocean liner, for which Christofle created more than 40,000 pieces of silverware).
Christofle was the first company on the European continent that made use of the galvanic techniques for the production of table silver. The company's printed catalogues in which since the 1850's all the models and prices of the current production were listed, were part of the modern marketing concept of Christofle.

The dinner service is composed by 207 pieces stored in its big original Christofle case with bronze knobs and lateral handles, with its linings marked 'Christofle A Paris'.
Our flatware service is made of the following cutlery: 34 forks, 35 knives, 9 soup spoons; 11 fish knives and 12 forks; 23 dessert forks and 23 knives; 11 dessert spoons; 6 tea spoons; 7 salt spoons; 9 ice cream spoons; 10 oyster forks; 16 utensils (the salad serving pieces are combined with horn).

The mark for Christofle was a bee in a wide diamond-shaped cartouche with a C on either side, three stars at the top an a balance in the middle. The number 84 refers to the grams of silver used in the electroplating process.

Conditions are excellent considering age and use; no chips, no scratches, no restorations.

This wonderful flatware service is decorated with scrolls, leaves to the handle and a Chrysanthemum to the back. The original and thick silver plating is perfect as well as the heavy and high quality metalwork.
