'Saint Anne with Mary', a papier machè sculpture, Lecce, Italy, late XVIII century.
Description:This sculpture was made in Lecce using the 'cartapestari' techinque: the first step was to built an armature, or skeleton, of wire or wood, covered by straw. The head and limbs made of terracotta were then added.
Subsequently, the figure was covered by papier-mâché (chewed paper), in order to get the desired anatomical shape. The 'focheggiatura' technique was then used.
This techique started in the baroque period in Lecce: a hot iron is used in order to model the folds, draping the robes directly on the figure and giving to it a natural drape.
Plaster was then added to our sculpture, that was finally polished and coulored.
Both figures have glass eyes while their heads, hands and feet are made of clay.
This is a devotional work and depicts St. Anne wrapping Mary in a cloak.
The gilded base dates from the same period as the sculpture itself.
The polychromy is partly original and partly dating from the nineteenth century.
