Kimono, coloured and gilded woodblock print, Japan, Kyoto, Showa era, c. 1930.
Description: Japanese Woodblock printing is a technique was widely used in the Ukiyo-e artistic genre, during the Edo period, from the seventeen century to the second part of the nineteen century. It has continued to be used until our days, featuring landscapes, actors, courtesans, peasants, brothels, animals.

According to this technique an image is drawn onto paper, and then glued onto a plank of wood. Wood would then be cut away, based on the outlines given by the drawing. A small wooden hard object would be used to press the paper against the inked woodblock, thus applying the ink onto the paper.

This Kimono woodblock print probably was produced in Kyoto, celebrated for its textile designs, called Hinagatabon. Ladies would have browsed through the prints and discussed it with their dressmakers.
It is possible that this image came from a kimono maker’s pattern book, where the simple outline of the garment could have been printed across numerous pages and the decorative designs added later.

This print illustrates sensitivity to beauty in nature and serves as a humble reminder of Japan’s long and glorious history in silk fabrics and embroidery.

Please note that the real print colour can be admired in the first two pictures on display.
