'Still life with lemons, oranges, chicory and a bottle', oil on canvas attributed to Nicola Ievoli (Italy, Rimini 1728/30-1801).
Description: Remigio Policarpo Levoli was born in Rimini in 1728. He was the son of the physician James Nicholas Ievoli and Magdalene Sarzetti, daughter of the painter Angelo.
Eight years after his father's death, taken into account the difficult economic situation of his family, he decided to become a prelate.
In 1747 he was in the Augustinian monastery of San Giacomo Maggiore in Bologna. The following year he took holy orders with the name Nicola.
In 1762 his passion for painting led him to enrol in Clementine Academy where he met Ubaldo Gandolfi (San Matteo della Decima, 1728 - Ravenna, 1781), he worked with during the time he spent at the Academy. In 1769 he returned to Rimini, in the convent of St. Augustine, where he remained until 1779. It is unknown where he lived in from 1779 to 1788 when he returned to Rimini to spend there the rest of his life.

Ievoli was a still life and domestic subjects painter: Adriatic fish as well as citrus fruits and other food items.

In this still life, dating from the late eighteenth century, the plane is not outlined but suggested by lights and shadows.
The lemon, orange, chicory and leeks are the main painting characters.
The brush stroke does not investigate the materiality of the objects: it captures the simplicity of their relation with light. The sober colors, the objects themselves and the composition evoke a feeling of a simple, everyday life.
Age: Late eighteenth century.
Dimensions: 16 1/2 x 23 inc.; with frame 22 1/2 x 28 1/4 inc.
