The ink sticks were made from mineral color. In the old days, Chinese artists used exclusively mineral or vegetable color. Their paintings lasted for over thousand years and the color is still very vibrant thousand years later.
The ink stick was introduced at the same time as paper in Han dynasty (206 BC - 200 AD), and
because they are consumable, ancient and old ink sticks are extremely precious to collectors.
Today it is still in the production of traditional Chinese watercolors, although the delicate colors and the quality of molds and decorative motifs are not to equal.
