Engravings > 1600 > Saint Jerome, etching by Giovanni Battista Coriolano, (Bologna 1590-1649).
Saint Jerome, etching by Giovanni Battista Coriolano, (Bologna 1590-1649).
Description: He was almost certainly the son of the German transplant to Italy, the engraver Cristoforo Coriolano.

Giovanni Battista was born and died in Bologna. He studied painting under Giovanni Luigi Valesio, but found little work painting in churches at Bologna. He painted a St. Nicholas and a St. Bruno for the church of Santa Anna; and an altarpiece of Saints John, James, & Bernard for the Nunziata.

He was more successful as an engraver, the main familial profession, he worked both on wood and on copper. Those in chiaroscuro are dated from 1619 to 1625.

The engraving of Saint Jerome is taken after a painting of Ferraù Fenzoni (1562-1645), an Italian painter mainly active in Todi. He is also called 'Il Faenzone' after his birthplace (Faenza).

He apprenticed in Rome during the papacy of Gregory XIII and labored in numerous fresco cycles under pope Sixtus V, such as the Loggia della Benedizioni in the Lateran Palace, the frescoes on the walls and vaults of the Scala Santa of the adjacent Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, and the decoration in the Sistine library.

His expressive canvases straddle the styles of Mannerism and Baroque. In 1594, he moved to Todi.
A Last Judgement from him is housed in the Duomo of Todi. The neighboring Bishop's palace has frescoes by Andrea Polinori and Fenzoni. He returned to Faenza in 1599, where he decorated chapels in the cathedral from 1612-16. In 1622, he completed a Deposition, now in the local Pinacoteca.

In 1640, Fenzoni was named cavaliere dello speron d’oro by Cardinal Colonna and, on April 25, 1634, was nominated vicar and castellano of Granarolo.
