Large porcelain plate, Japan, Kutani, beginning of Meiji era, second half of XIX century.
Description: Kutani (meaning ‘nine valleys’) is the name of a mountain village situated close to western coast of the island of Hondo.
The large dish shown here is made from heavy white porcelain decorated with multi-coloured enamels with a milky-white overlay. The colours include coral red, brownish black and faded green, while the gold is at once very brilliant and very thickly applied.
The thick glass overlay forms characteristically wide craquelures.

Three of the four sections that contain the decoration are in the form of scrolls, with the fourth being in the form of a fan.
Within the fan-shaped section, there is a standing woman wrapped in a rich kimono, decorated with golden clouds over a coral red background. The woman gazes lovingly upon her son, who gazes back as he rides his hobbyhorse. The background features a naturalistic cherry blossom motif.
The other sections feature peonies and chrysanthemums with sparrows in flight above.
In all four sections, the sky is evoked through a light ‘fog’ created using tiny red marks that thin out towards the top.

The kanji character(漢字, it's used in the Japanese writing), painted in red on the dish's back, is the mark of the piece: Kutani Sei Kanaido (it's made in the Kanai's factory in Kutani village), Miya (inside a red circle, means the product number).
The two Kanji on the right side are the painter's name.
Age: Beginning of Meiji era (1869-1912), c. 1870.
Dimensions: Diameter : 13 inches
