Description:Painter, decorator illustrator, Drian seems to have been influenced by rapid and incisive lines of Boldini and Domuergue.
Etienne Adrièn was born into a peasant family in Lorraine in 1885. During the first years of the past century, the young artist moved to Paris to study in the Acadèmie Julian, where he took the pseudonym of Drian, as his contemporaries heard in his slurred Lorrain accent.
In Paris he was a regular contributor to the Gazette du Bon Ton, Fèmina and Harper’s Bazaar.
The lifelong collaboration with the parisian publisher Devambez was definitely very important for Drian.
Various collections of the artist’s prints and etchings , as well as many illustrations by Drian for Paul Geraldy and Sasche Guitry works, were published by Devambez.
Called the "peintre de la femme", Drian is remembered basically for exalting and glorifying the french women, especially the female figures from Paris during the first World war.
Drian created teathre costumes and set-decoration. He also designed very famous screenings, and few furnitures.
Aquatint is a sort of etching with a very special watercolor effect.
This aquatint, "Hat stylist", belongs to a set of six published in the 20s in a limited edition with the title of “La Femme et la Guerre”.
Every aquatint is hand signed by the author.
