Description:A pupil of Léon Cogniet, he exhibited at the Salon in Paris from 1846 to 1872. He was a gifted portrait painter, specialising in historical and religious subjects and genre painting.
His most important works include the portraits of Saints Brieuc and Guillaume, which are housed in the Church of Saint-Guillaume at Saint Brieuc and which date from 1876. Another renowned work of his is the full-figure portrait of Monsignor Augustin David, which is at the Academy in Rennes. The city of Nantes plays host to two other important pieces: 'A Factotum' at the Museum of Fine Arts and 'The Communion' in the Church of Notre Dame.
His 'Mater Misericordiae' was exhibited at the Salon in Paris in 1847 with catalogue number 732. The paper label is still visible in the upper central section of the painting.
The gilded frame was commissioned by the painter himself to mark the exhibition at the Parisian Salon. The plasterwork decoration features one of the themes depicted in the painting itself: the snake – symbol of sin and heresy.
