Four sapphire-blue blown-glass cups with saucers, probably made by Venini, Murano, c. 1920
Description:These glass cups, attributable to the Venini factory, are made from sapphire-blue blown glass.
The edge of each saucer alternates between thick and thin – an effect created by blowing cast glass. The thicker sections have a brighter colour.
The handles of the cups are made from clear glass.
In the early 1920s, the minimalist lines of this design represented a break from tradition and ushered in a new, more ‘essential’ and quality-conscious era.
In this period, a dedication to the purity of thin sheet glass and a restrained use of subtle colour were combined with an understated approach to decoration to produce a plethora of delightful objects.
The Catalogo Blu (Blue Catalogue), edited by Venini in 1936, showcases a number of pieces that are stylistically similar to our cups, specifically in terms of their use of blue.
The pieces in the catalogue were designed under the artistic direction of Vittorio Zecchin (1921-1925).
