Box with silvered metal cover, Germany, WMF workshop, 1910-1920.
Description:The wooden box, which was probably intended to store cigars, features a decorated cover depicting a horse's head with armor in relief. The German workshop "Wurttembergische Metallwarenfabrik” (WMF), located in Geislingen (G) and still in existence (albeit under different mark), started to use its distinctive ostrich mark from 1880 onwards. In particular, the mark shown on this box - known as the "honeybee" - was introduced on July 1, 1909, at the request of the French customs authorities. Before being imported into France, all WMF products had to be stamped with this marking, which is shown below larger that actual size.
