These coolers were produced in early 18th century Britain, before by chance ending up in France or Italy in the middle of that century.
The technique used involved laying out a thin sheet of iron or copper, and then covering it with a material whose main component was fossilized carbon. This prepared the surface for decoration.
The technique was used to produce small and medium-sized objects, as well as furniture.
The inside of our tumbler have lost its original cream-colored coating where the ice would have sat.
