An alabaster table clock, Italy, Volterra, c.1830.
Description:This antique alabaster table clock is decorated with classical elements which allude to the flow of time. We can see the inspiration by Greek, Etruscan, Roman, Pompei and Herculaneum style.
In this framework it can be noted the decoration made of rosettes, acanthus leaves and the lion's head finely carved.
The clock front is decorated by a gilded bronze ring.
The alabaster, extracted in the quarries of Volterra, has been used in that area since the ancient times. The Volterra's alabaster - between the eighteenth and nineteenth century - became well known throughout the world.
The clock is still perfectly working.
