A gilded silver bracelet, Indonesia, late XIX century.
Description:Rich cultural traditions and a tradition for displaying personal wealth as fine personal adornments have supported a flourishing silver-smithing industry in Indonesia for centuries.
In neighboring East Java, silversmiths drew on their own traditions to create striking original designs. During the late XIX century, east Java was also a rapidly industrializing region, with infrastructure and a human resources able to support a flourishing silver casting workshops.
These jewels were used in gift exchanges between the families of bride and groom. This particular type would be given by the family of the ‘wife-takers’ to the family of the ‘wife-givers’.
In our example there's the bride's name ANA written inside the bracelet.
The bracelet is in good condition showing only minimal and expected wear from years of adornment.
