Embroidered corporal silk burse, Rome, Italy, mid of XIX century.
Description: The Burse, known also as a 'corporas-case' is a type of folder of the same color as the vestments, used to carry the corporal to and from the altar.
It is made out of two square pieces of cardboard laid one on top of the other, then bound together along one edge to form a hinge.
The two pieces are attached with cloth along the two sides adjacent to the hinge, leaving the fourth end open to receive the corporal.
It is placed over the veil on top of the chalice.
Our gros grain silk bourse is embroidered with fine gold and silver threads.
