A velvet and silver thread embroidered kokoshnik (russian, кокошник) , late 18th c, Moscow, central Russia. | Description: Kokoshnik (russian, кокошник), is a ceremonial tall head-dress worn by Russian women, made of rich fabrics elaborately decorated with beads, pearls, embroidery, and sometimes gemstones.
Colors for kokoshniki are frequently red or gold, more rarely green.
Kokoshniki had countless variations and forms distinguished by regional fashions, women's age, social class.
They are made often with cut velvet, brocade, and embellish it with pearls, beads, gold embroidery, gimp, or metal findings.
Kokoshniks were part of the official court dress for ladies in the Russian Empire during the 19th century.
