“Child”, patinated bronze sculpture, signed by R.W. Lange, France or Germany, early 20th century.
Description:This sculpture, made using the "lost wax" casting technique, is distinctive for the sense of movement with which the sculptor has endowed the character, who carefully inspects what is perhaps an insect trapped between his fingers. Crafted meticulously to be as true-to-life as possible, this work is typical of the prevalent trend in sculpture and painting in the 1910s and '20s, which drew its inspiration from the daily life of the workers and the common people.
This statuette, signed on the base by R.W. Lange, is mounted onto a double height support of red Francia and grey Santa Anna marble, and bears the initials of the FWB foundry. The patina is darkish green tending to brown in color.
R.W. Lange also produced figures sculpted from bronze, substituting certain parts (face and hands) with ivory, as did the renowned master Démètre Chiparus.
Age:Early 20th century.
Dimensions:Height with base 27.5cm; height without base 20.5cm. (10.82 inches, 8.07 inches)
