Winged sphinxes, large gilded bronze bas reliefs, Russia, c. 1810
Description:Winged sphinxes, large bronze bas reliefs, Russia, c. 1810
The evident French influence, already present in Russia under Catherine II, was popularized both through diplomatic channels (in the form of gifts) and through acquisitions on the part of the artistocracy and the Royal family itself. This is how the Imperial Style came to prominence in the early 19th century.
The Napoleonic compaigns in Egypt asserted considerable influence over the decorative arts in terms of the rigor and solemnity of the forms, thus renewing the iconographic repertoire: crocodiles, lotus flowers, hieroglyphs and sphinxes.
The high quality of the chased work and gilding - as seen in the crafting of the feathers, acanthus leaves and hair indicates that these bas reliefs were produced by a bronzemaker in St. Petersburg, an area famed for its bronze pieces. It should be noted that these bas reliefs were embossed and chased, rather than being made through fusion. As a result, they are not exactly the same.
