A gilded and engraved reliquary, Nuremberg, Germany, sixteenth century.
Description:This oval reliquary, in German Reliquienkapsel, is made of gilded copper and was used for private devotion.
Two lids protect the relics of the saints which were enclosed inside; engraved decorations can be found at their center.
On one lid we find the monogram IHS surmounted by the cross, surrounded by the rays of the sun together with the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the three nails of the Passion. All these elements are enclosed by winged cherubs.
On the other lid engraved foliages, flowers, two masks and a central shield can be found.
A similar reliquary was sold as 'Portabolla' at the auction house Finarte, in Milan, lot 124, auction 1360, the 14th of December 2006.
Provenance: collection of the artist and antique dealer Attilio Simonetti (Rome 1843 - 1925), Rome.
