The Nativity, crib figures, Naples, Italy, nineteenth century.
Description:The Nativity scene is made up of St. Joseph, the Virgin and the Child.
In Naples the Christ nativity characters (Presepio) have been modelled as follow: head in polychrome terracotta, hands and feet in painted wood, glass eyes, body in iron wire covered with straw.
The Neapolitan Presepio characters' clothes always reproduce the clothes used or on fashion in the period during which the specific characters were made, in typical poses called 'natural gestures'. Peasants, aristocrats, nobles, and bourgeoises were represented in their social class typical attitudes.
Ours Nativity's dresses are original from the nineteenth-century: the Madonna wear a pink silk tunic and a cotton petticoat trimmed with lace, tied at the waist by a ribbon of the same color; the mantle is of blue silk and she has a transparent veil that descends from the head.
St. Joseph is dressed with a white linen shirt, breeches and coat in purple silk and with a robe draped in yellow silk.
The Child is modeled in terracotta and painted.
There are some repainted parts on the faces and the hands. Virgin's left hand has been restored.
The wooden base was made in the mid-twentieth century.
