A Neapolitan crib figure of a Peasant, nineteenth century.
Description:In Naples the Christ nativity characters (Presepio) have been modelled as follow: head in polychrome terracotta, hands and feet in painted wood, glass eyes, body in iron wire covered with straw.
The Neapolitan Presepio characters' clothes always reproduce the clothes used or on fashion in the period during which the specific characters were made, in typical poses called 'natural gestures'. Peasants, aristocrats, nobles, and bourgeoises were represented in their social class typical attitudes.
Our Peasant dress is original from the nineteenth-century: the shirt is in white batiste edged with lace, blue bodice with gold braid, purple silk jacket, brick red apron with gold braid.
The wooden base, was made in the mid-twentieth century.
Our figure is without a finger (left hand).
