'Scugnizzo', a Bronze sculpture by Giuseppe D'Aste (Naples, Italy 1881 - France 1945), c. 1910.
Description:Giuseppe D'Aste (Naples 1881 - France 1945) or Joseph D'Asté, was a sculptor who worked first in Italy and later in France.
He was a sculptor of folksy scenes, animals and portraits.
He arrived in France in the early twentieth century and between 1905 and 1934 he exhibited groups of children and animals at the 'Salon of French Artists' in Paris.
His early production from 1905-1915 was characterized by 'realist' subjets of the Neapolitan tradition, typical of the time, such as a street urchin, some card players and fishermen.
The sculptor drew spontaneous narrative ideas in the alleys of the old town, expressing the human reality.
His later works, in Paris, captured the Art Deco movement of the 1920's.
In this phase of his life he made sculptures in bronze with ivory heads and hands.
Our bronze bust is modelled and cast as a street urchin (in neapolitan 'scugnizzo') mounted on a green marble base.
It's signed 'J.D'Aste' on a corner o the bust lower part.
