Paperweight with the cameo glass portrait of Pope Pius IX (1792 – 1878), Rome, second half of the 19th century.
Description:In the center of the paperweight there is the portrait of Pope Pius IX (1792 – 1878), born Giovanni Maria Mastai-Ferretti, serving from 1846 until his death.
The pope portrait is made with the tecnique of Cameo glass. It is produced by etching and carving through fused layers of differently coloured glass to produce designs, usually with white opaque glass figures and motifs on a dark-coloured background. In this cameo glass it was used only the carved white one. It'was put against a dark glass plate to create the colour contrast.
The technique is first seen in ancient Roman art.
The cameo glass set was then put on an oval red marble surface on a black marble base.
Age:Second half of the 19th century.
