Prophet, coated-wood sculpture, Northern France, late 16th/early 17th century.
Description:This sculpture is made from boxwood and represents a naked old man with a cloak wrapped around the right shoulder, held in place by a waistband that collects the garment together and creates numerous folds.
Despite the fact that both arms are missing, the quality of the sculpture is indicative both of its importance and of the skill of its sculptor in rendering a sense of movement, as exemplified in the torsion of the bust and the thick beard.
The intended location for the sculpture is clear in its shape: rather than being a figure-in-the-round, the rear was left flat so that it could be inserted into a panel or against any flat surface. It was probably part of a more complex composition featuring several sculptures.
