Small soup dish, Japan, Imari, Edo period, first half of the 19th century.
Description:
The typical Imari colour scheme is a dark blue undercoat with red and gold top coats. The decorators had to follow the guidelines previously traced out in blue, painting their own designs over them. As such, the colour served as a border for the decorations and as a basis for the pattern, often represented by fan-shaped reserves and spirals against a cobalt blue background.
The decoration on our little soup dish is characterised by stylised peonies on the blue field and by scattered chrysanthemum corollas on the white field. The polylobate handle of the lid is decorated with a golden crane, symbol of immortality. Imari objects were usually made for export and designed to adorn the large interiors of European houses.
