A large Imari plate, Japan, late Meiji era (1868-1912), c. 1890.
Description:Our large Imari plate is made of heavy white porcelain decorated with multi-coloured enamels with a white overlay. Its colours include coral red, brownish black and faded green, very brilliant gold; the typical Imari colour scheme is a dark blue undercoat with red and gold top coats.
This Imari plate is decorated with carps (koi in japanese), symbol of strength, courage, determination and of a spirit that can fight against adversity. It is said that only the most determined koi can swim upstream and leap the waterfalls, to be finally rewarded by being turned into a dragon. These fishes are considered a sign of good luck.
Imari objects were usually made for export and meant to adorn the wide European houses interiors.
