Richard Klemm hand painted porcelain vase, Dresden, Germany, late XIX century.
Description:Richard Klemm Decorating Studio, was in business from 1869-1949 in Dresden, Germany.
This particular mark has been dated to the years of c.1891-1914 (source: Dresden Porcelain Studios by Harran, page 53).
This vase was entirely hand-painted using gold and multicoloured enamels.
Given the precious and costly nature of gold, the fact that it is used so abundantly here indicates that the piece was specifically commissioned.
Indeed, on the base of the vase, alongside the production marks, there is also the handwritten name of the woman portrayed: Clementine. The portrait is after a famous painting by Conrad Kiesel (Dusseldorf 1846 - Berlin 1921), as written in a corner inside the painting itself: 'n. C. Kiesel'.
The accomplished use of enamel imbues the face with great softness and there is a laudable realism in the depiction of the flesh and the expression of the subject.
