Pair of natural mahogany armchairs, lacquered and gilded, Directoire period, France, c. 1795.
Description:Pair of natural mahogany armchairs, lacquered and gilded, Directoire period, France, c. 1795.
The Directoire period, to which this pair of armchairs belongs, is characterised by the consistent use of mahogany, by a decidedly austere formal severity that anticipates the Imperial style, and by the subtle influence of ancient history that can be detected in the dark-green painted uprights, which imitate the oxidised bronzes recovered from Herculaneum and Pompeii. The rear sabre legs are typical of the period, whereas the front legs - in the shape of an upside-down truncated pyramid - are a remnant of the Louis XVI style. Modern reproduction fabric and padding.
