Candlesticks with Bacchus herm, Germany, c. 1820.
Description:Candlesticks with Bacchus herm, made from Fonte de Berlin with bronze patina, Germany, c. 1820.
The use of cast iron together with other materials - referred to as Fonte de Berlin - had its origins in Prussia during the Napoleonic wars as a substitute for more expensive metals such as bronze and silver. It was also used in jewellery in place of the more noble gold. These candlesticks are decorated with the classic symbols of Bacchus: vine leaves, bunches of grapes, amphorae and musical instruments. The base is made from black Belgian marble.
Some objets similar to our candlesticks could be seen at the Frankfurt Kunsthandwerk museum, in Germany.
