Description:The box lid features faunal and floral decoration created using the maki-e technique.
This technique sees the lacquer being sprayed with gold and silver dust, in different thicknesses, in order to produce an alternation between compact, well-defined surfaces and softer areas.
The box lid is decorated with flying sparrows, pine branches, rocks, lotus leaves and a stylized stream of water painted using the technique of maki-e .
In Japanese culture, the combination of the representation of pine (evergreen and long-lived) with the rock (strength and ancient) has the meaning of longevity.
The interior of the box is decorated with red lacquer.
