Great fan-shaped letter opener within sheath, decorated with black lacquer and maki-e in gold and silver, Japan, Taisho period, 大 正 时代 (1912-1926).
Description:The sheath and the handle of the letter opener were created using the maki-e technique.
This technique consist of the lacquer being sprayed with gold and silver dust, in different thicknesses, in order to produce an alternation between compact, well-defined surfaces and softer areas.
The letter opener is decorated on one side with pine branches, clouds, fishing rods and baskets painted in gold. The other side is decorated with pagodas and clouds realized with the technique of maki-e.
The other two red sides were carved with fine lines, to simulate a closed fan folds.
