Description:This pair of reddish-purple and gold lacquered covered bowls, decorated with a stylized lobster, were created using the maki-e technique.
This technique consist of the lacquer being sprayed with gold and silver dust, in different thicknesses, in order to produce an alternation between compact, well-defined surfaces and softer areas.
The lobster, Ebi (蝦 or えび), is a symbol of longevity, often used during the New Year's celebrations. It appears, occasionally, as a family crest, adorns textiles, and can be found on a variety of applied art objects.
