Small tray with four lacquered and gold boxes, Japan, early Meiji era, late 19th century.
Description:The lids of the four small boxes feature decorative naturalistic depictions of a pomegranate, a sheaf of hay, geese and greenery, all created using the maki-e technique.
This technique sees the lacquer being sprayed with gold and silver dust, in different thicknesses, in order to produce an alternation between compact, well-defined surfaces and softer areas.
Prior to decoration, the black lacquer is stretched over a layer of red lacquer, which remains transparently visible even after the decoration has been applied.
The four small containers are inserted within a tray that has a hole in the bottom to allow the first box to be removed more easily.
The inside of the boxes and the inner surface of the tray that contains them have been decorated using lightly sprayed-on gold dust.
Age:Early Meiji era (1868-1912), c.1870.
