Engravings > 1600 > 'Coriolanus and the roman ambassadors', etching by Charles de La Haye (1641 -?) from a drawing by Ciro Ferri (1634-1689).
'Coriolanus and the roman ambassadors', etching by Charles de La Haye (1641 -?) from a drawing by Ciro Ferri (1634-1689).
Description: This etching was engraved by Charles de La Haye (1641 -?) in Rome, from a drawing by Ciro Ferri (1634-1689) and dedicated to Cardinal Domenico Maria Corsi (Florence 1633-Rimini 1697).
The preparatory study (black pencil on white paper mm. 245x392 mm.), was acquired in 2002 by the Italian Government and donated to the Uffizi Museum in Florence.
The figures on the right side of the sketch and of our etching, with few variants, can also be found in a painting in Potsdam, 'Vetturia and Volumnia in front of Coriolanus'.

As far as the dating is concerned, it has to be assumed that it was printed by Giovanni Giacomo de' Rossi (1627-1691) after 1677 (the year of the first publication of the Indice de' Rossi, in which the engrave is still not mentioned) and before 1686, date on which it appeared in the new edition of the Indice de' Rossi.
