'Imagerie Pellerin', collection of 15 multiple plates depicting various subjects, Epinal, France, late XIX-beginning of XX century.
Description:Jean-Charles Pellerin was the founder of Imagerie Epinal. It was in Épinal, in the Vosges Mountains (France), in 1796, that he established this print works, which focused on contemporary printing methods. He started to use woodcarving to emphasise lettering, and au pochoir colouring to make the images come alive through bright colours applied by hand with stencils.
Beginning in 1800, Pellerin diversified his production and started to produce popular images and costumes to be cut out and glued to cards. While continuing to make playing cards and cards with religious imagery on them, he also started to print historical images celebrating the exploits of Napoleon and his army, which raised the profile of the company no end.
Over the course of several decades, he published everything from religious images to tales, histories, pictures of current events, vignettes and images for schools.
The period 1800-1815 saw the appearance of multiple plates featuring soldiers, which – just like small lead soldiers had done before – became toys for children.
The subjects depicted by the 15 plates offered here are as follows: 'Mexican Costumes', 'Theatrical Costumes', 'Theatrical Decor', 'Gallery of the Kings of France', 'Gallery of the Queens of France'.
