The Trinity, pencil, pen and brown ink on paper, wash, Roman School, late 17th Century.
Description:The iconography of this work is based on the theme of the Trinity: Christ with the Cross surrounded by angels, cherubims and clouds, in the presence of the blessing Holy Father and the Dove of the Holy Spirit.
The composition – which was probably a preparatory study for a fresco – can be attributed to the Roman artistic scene dominated by Pietro da Cortona (Cortona 1596 - Rome 1669).
Certain stylistic and compositional elements – such as the perspective and the giddying, ascensional progress of the figures across the paper – clearly take their cue from Cortonesque prototypes.
The artist also focused his attention on the chiaroscuro effects, with marked washes.
The work is dated as late 17th century on the basis of the modernity of the design (the composition lightening the baroque naturalness) and by the type of paper used.
Age:Late 17th Century.
