Study for Fountain, pencil, pen and black ink with green wash, Roman School, c. 1780.
Description:In all probability, this drawing is a study for a fountain to be inserted into a niche and located within a noble palazzo.
In the late 18th century, the neo-classical taste and culture led to a fascination with motifs taken from the ancient world.
Anthropomorphous masks, garlands, vases and urns are the typical neo-classical decorative motifs that adorn the architecture of that time.
The fountain bowl sits on a marble plinth decorated by vegetal elements.
The architect, who composed the study, opted for the classical solutions that were very much in vogue at the time in which the fountain was created.
