Mary Magdalene, Guido Reni's school, first half of the 17th century.
Description: Mary Magdalene, oil on canvas, Emilian school of the first half of the 17th century. Mary Magdalene's distinctive long, flowing locks allude to the biblical story in which she bathed Jesus' feet with her tears of repentance and dried them with her hair. This is a devotional work - clearly inspired by Guido Reni - which engages the viewer in the act of devotion, in the emotion of the moment and in the spiritual sentiment. In its classical grace, the act of repentance is effectively depicted by the theatricality of the gesture, by the use of a burnished, rather severe palette and by the contrasts of light and shade. Alongside the act of contemplation, the glimmering light of the landscape is indicative of divine forgiveness.
Restoration: the photograph taken before the restoration shows both the excellent state of conservation of the painting and two cleaning tests revealing the original colours that had been hidden by centuries-old coatings. The painting has been relined. The frame is modern.
