'Saint Peter', oil on paper, signed - Giu. Palma fece 1840 -, italian school of the first half of the nineteenth century.
Description:Giuseppe Palma was a painter from Abruzzo, Italy, active in the first half of the nineteenth century, of whom we have no many news.
In the church of St. Nicholas of Mira -Rodi Garganico, in Foggia's province, in the altar of Purgatory, is preserved a painting of the Holy Trinity with in the background the city of Assisi suspended between clouds and angels, and in the foreground, the saints Alfonso Liguori and Thomas Aquinas. The painting, dating back to 1844, was considered by critics as a mixture of styles typical of the time and attributed to the painter Giuseppe Palma.
The painting is still inspired by the eighteenth century style. It depicts St. Peter attributes: the keys of the kingdom of heaven that Jesus promised to give him, and the cock, to remember that he denied Him three times before it sung.
The wood frame in solid walnut and the blown glass dates from the same period as the painting itself.
