'Aurora', oil on canvas after Giovanni Francesco Barbieri (1591-1666), Rome, late eighteenth century.
Description:The author of this painting (Roman school of the late eighteenth century) has copied the famous Guercino's 'Aurora' fresco, in Rome at the Casino Ludovisi.
The painter probably took, as a model for this work, the engraving (mm. 438 x 903 mm.) dedicated from the engraver Giovanni Volpato (1733-1803) to the Swiss painter Angelica Kauffmann (Chur 1741-Rome 1807).
The engraving, as well as the painting, reproduces, in purely neoclassical forms, the seventeenth-century fresco depicting the Aurora chariot fleeing the darkness of the night.
The gilded carved wood frame dates from the same period as the painting itself.
Age:late 18th century
Dimensions:39 x 20 inc.; 49 x 29,5 inc. with frame.
