'The Model', oil on canvas by Angelo Dall'Oca Bianca (Verona, Italy, 1858 - 1942), 1912. | Description: Angelo Dall'Oca Bianca (Verona 1858 - 1942) attended the Cignaroli Academy of Fine Arts in Verona under Napoleone Nani. In 1876 He specialised at the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice where he was influenced by Giacomo Favretto.
The Esposizione of Brera (Milan) in 1880 and the Esposizione Nazionale of Milan in 1881 where among the first important exhibitions he participated to.
Later he went to Rome where he met Gabriele D'Annunzio, Francesco Paolo Michetti and he was introduced to Queen Margherita of Italy, who commissioned him several works.
In 1883 he participated at the International Exhibition of Fine Arts in Rome and, later, at the Esposizione in Turin, at the Internazionale of Barcelona, and in 1900, at the Universal Exhibition in Paris where he won the first prize.
In the early twentieth century, he was influenced by pointillism and symbolism. We can appreciate such an influence in his works on display at several Venice Biennale during this period. His renewed chromaticism became bright and lively, close to the colors of the pastel, typical of his works before the Great War and - among them - of the painting 'The model' shown here.
He participated to the 1903 Venice Biennale with eight paintings and to the 1905 Biennale with 'Shadows and lights of spring', 'The Church', 'Poetry Night'. In 1912 he took part in the Venice Biennale with a solo exhibition with more than eighty works and with an important autobiographical note. The work presented here was exposed at this edition.
The painter's favorite subjects were: the city of Verona and the Garda's Lake, the women's beauty and seduction, and the portraits from childhood to maturity.
His works are in many museums and private collections, including the Gallery of Modern Art in Milan, the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome, the Gallery of Modern Art in Venice, the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Palazzo Forti in Verona.
The painting is signed in red at the top left: A. Dall'Oca B.
