'Consular road to Pompei', oil on paper, Italy, late XIX century.
Description:This oil painted on paper highlights the unceasing attraction exerted by the excavation sites in Pompei, which still in the second half of the XIX century could be acceded only with the authorization by the Real Museo (Royal Museum).
The painter – possibly a foreigner – is charmed by the contrast between the landscape as it is, as opposed to the remains of the past.
To paint his 'Consular road to Pompei' the artist chose the area located north of the excavations. The wall lines grow monumental and the deep view of the cobbled street stands against the intense greenish sky, in a typical late evening light.
The consular street was apparently painted from the north-east end of the town, against the backdrop of the Sorrento peninsula.
