'Mary Magdalene', oil on copper, Italy, sebastiano Conca's school, early 18th century.
Description:This painting, intended for private worship, depicts Mary Magdalene meditating on the earthly vanities, which are implied through the presence of a skull.
An unguent vase is barely visible beyond Mary’s right arm –according to the Gospels, she was one of the women who brought perfumed oils to anoint the body of Christ after the crucifixion.
She is here wrapped in billowing violet robes, contrasting with her dark red hair, at the entrance to a cave where she had retreated to be alone and to pray.
The influence of Sebastiano Conca is clear, if it is referred to the Mary Magdalene of the Galleria Doria Pamphili in Rome, dated 1732, still tied to the seventeenth-century stylistic elements.
The scenic landscape openness also gives breath to the scene and it is used in another Magdalene painted by Conca and housed in the Kopelman collection in New York.
Mary’s expression is ecstatic, her face turned to the heavens as her half-closed mouth subtly reveals her teeth.
The frame is made from wood and gilded pastiglia, decorated with acanthus leaves. It dates from the 19th century.
