"Woman returning from the market", panel painting, Flanders, signed and dated ‘Maes 1831’.
Description:This painting, which depicts a woman on a bridge with a basket of fruit, may be the work of Jean Baptist Lodewyck Maes (Gand 1794 - Rome 1856).
Maes specialised in historical scenes, religious compositions, genre painting and portraits. A student of the Gand Academy, he was awarded a scholarship to Paris.
On winning the Prix de Rome in 1821, he moved permanently to the Italian city.
This oil painting on an oak panel represents a typically Flemish genre scene, characterized here by elements often used during the Restoration period, with dense, brightly coloured, Imperial-style clothing.
